I tried holding on to the rod with a monkey wrench/vise grip but it still turns when I try to turn the nut.

1Soak it in a penetrant? Not WD-40, something like Aero Kroil, or a 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid.– HuesmannCommented Nov 10 at 17:09

"How" is dependant on whether you want to save what it attached to or not. If not, I would hold the round silver part on the top of the ceramic thing with large slip joint pliers, then use a 6 point box wrench on the nut. The rod is so rusted it is not likely to be salvageable.– RMDmanCommented Nov 10 at 17:17

@RMDman unfortunately the rod can turn while the part above the ceramic is steady.– SimdCommented Nov 10 at 17:19

2Have you tried to let the rod continue to turn, to see if it unscrews from the silver part?– RMDmanCommented Nov 10 at 17:22

@RMDman I have to a limited extent. I could try that for longer.– SimdCommented Nov 10 at 17:52

If the suggestions in comments don't work for you, or if you feel they risk damage, you can use a nut splitter. It will destroy the nut but it should leave the threaded rod undamaged.
