Apr 26, 2018 at 22:31 comment added spaced - out @Tyson Thanks for the comment. I think on reflection it may be my manhandling has damaged it, there is an exposed copper thread that's become severed. I thought it inconsequential at the time but now I think it is part of the coil. I'll have to see if I can re-solder it together.
