The woodworking SE would probably give you a better educated guess but my impression is that there was no stain involved. Just a clear oil based finish which has aged.

Skip the oil, apply pure carnauba wax (quite hard) with a buffer, or else buy softened carnauba (the stuff I prefer for softened is softened with turpentine and hasn't been made in decades, evidently.)...

Linseed oil is non-VOC, traditional, and works. Raw (rather than boiled) is what's normally used outdoors.
