The other day I noticed the basement floor was damp around my water softener. I opened the lid and found that it was almost completely full of water. As I thought about it I couldn't remember the last time I heard the thing go through the recharge cycle, though I may have changed it to recharge during the day when I'm not at home. I also had a power outage a couple of months ago, so that may have reset the schedule.

Would not running the recharge cycle for an extended period explain the tank filling up with water or am I likely looking at something more serious?

Assuming it is due to not being run, would running it now be safe to do while it is full of water?

I can provide additional details as needed when I get home.
