Single-line 1 HP shallow well pump with preinstalled 5 gal pressure tank (one of these). Not attached to a well, but drawing water from a tank level with the pump.

After a year of disuse, I started it up today. The motor runs, but I cannot get prime. When I turn the power on: (1) With the priming port open, the surface of the water inside the pump is still. (2) The fan blades at the back of the motor do not turn freely.

From this, I am guessing that for some reason the impeller is not turning: Either the impeller or some other mechanical part in the pump is stuck, or the motor is not functioning correctly.

Any suggestions re next steps in troubleshooting? Take the pump apart?

After a year of unuse, imagine seals and gaskets are dried out and/or broken. Probably will need to take pump section apart and replace seals.

  • If it is a standard centrifugal pump if it spins it should work what type of pump is it? Even a photo could be helpful.

  • Thanks, both. Added link to photo and some new information above. I now believe that the impeller is not turning.

  • What is the lift height?

  • Lift height is zero, or maybe one foot. It is attempting to draw out of a tank level with the pump, for this test. This also matches how I would be using it.
