I bought a two-story condo that has two back decks and a roof deck, all with at least a few planks damaged beyond repair, but 95% in good enough condition to re-finish. We live two blocks from the coast in New England, so I wanted to refinish the decks this summer to try to get as much life out of these decks as possible, but recently learned that you should not stain new pressure-treated wood. If that’s true, would it be enough time for the pt wood to dry enough to take on stain if I installed in June and re-finished in September?

Thanks for any and all advice.

  • May try to find KDAT (kiln dried after treatment) wood fir the repairs. They will need cleaned to remove mill glaze but the long drying time before staining will be greatly reduced.
