What to do with red wire from ceiling/supply when hooking up ceiling fan with attached light and remote?

First time- I put the black wire from receiver output side (this side has wires that are black, white and blue) and black from fan to the red wire from ceiling supply in one wire nut. Remote worked for fan temporarily. I turned off breaker and then stopped working for fan. The remote still worked to control the lights on fan.

Second time, I capped the red wire from the ceiling. Now, on the remote fan buttons(low, med, high speed) won’t turn on. However, the variable breeze button that’s for the fan makes the the lights flicker on the ceiling fan.

I have not checked yet to see if need to cap the red wire in the wall switch.

Any ideas what I did wrong or what to do?enter image description here

  • The remote allows independent control of light and fan with only one hot wire input to the receiver. If you have two input hots available, the simplest thing is to use only one, e.g., the black, and cap off the red input.

  • To Kris first comment : From ceiling supply is white, black, red and ground wires. No fan installed in home previously. New home. has 2 gang box switches on wall. One dedicated switch for the for the 4 can receptacles and the right switch could be used to control fan.
