Whenever I turn on my bathroom sinks for more than 5 seconds, I can hear gurgling in the walls, and shortly after, a terrible smell fills the bathroom. Is this a problem with my vent lines?

What does "death" smell like? – Mike Waters Aug 8 '19 at 3:57

"gurgling in the walls" sounds like a vent problem or a blockage in one of the drain lines – Jasen Aug 8 '19 at 5:43

Been there, smelled that. I believe your drain has acquired a build up and soap/whiskers/etc. and possibly a mold/fungus. Get an enzyme drain cleaner such as Bio-Clean (amazon has it) or Zep Drain Defense Liquid Build-Up Remover (big box store). You might need a few applications. Regular application will prevent that happening. – NothingToSeeHere Aug 8 '19 at 11:13
  • Recently had the same, when the bathroom was renovated, found that the waste pipes were running uphill as they passed through the brick wall outside to the main waste. Pipe was coated in gunk. – scotty3785 Jan 6 at 12:03

Also, check on your roof to make sure that your vent pipe is not blocked. A bird nest or dead rat is a common issue. The bird nest is easy to see, the dead rat, no so much...
