I wan thinking of sealing off my window with a large 1/4" or even 1/2" sheet of acrylic (plexiglass) to block some noise by covering the window with it and making it airtight, essentially adding another temporary pane to the window.
The problem is that the huge 5x6 foot, 1/4" thick sheet will be well over 100 pounds (120 lbs for 1/4"; nearly 250 lbs for 1/2"), and it will also be huge in size making it really hard to transport as well as difficult to move or even to get in the room, not to mention up the stairs, and nearly impossible for 1 person.
However, if I could use 2 or even 4 smaller pieces, that would make it much more lightweight. Ideally, I would like to make 4 panels instead of one huge piece, which will be both easier to transport as well as much more lightweight.
Cost doesn't matter because the local supplier will give me one huge sheet, or cut the sheet into pieces for me for the same cost.
If I could do 4 panels butted up to each other and use silicone caulk to make it airtight, that would be better for weight, installation, and transportation. The major concern is then will this perform the same or nearly the same as one giant solid sheet?
