I need to install some oak kitchen worktops. I'm planning to use a butt joint because the length won't allow for a 45 degree joint. I'm getting a bit confused about the best way to seal the cut edges to protect and join them.

If I read the instructions here right, the best approach is to apply 3 (or more) coats of danish oil, then seal with silicone during assembly. I guess this is allowing for there being some movement in the joint, and the silicone being more of a gap filler than a waterproof protection. Is this right? I have a nagging doubt about how a recently oiled surface will interact with silicone.
