I left my hot water on all night by accident. Now the water is EXTREMELY hot and the floor above the water line is warm. When I turn on the cold water, the first 10 seconds or so, hot water is coming out. The pressure is terrible. I have looked under the house and in the kitchen area and cannot detect a leak. I finally turned off the water heater yesterday and I am going to relight it tonight. Does anyone know what might be going on?

  • First is this a tanked or tankless water heater? 2nd Is the valve on a shower? That was left on? The thermostatic mixing valve may have malfunctioned. Have you tried another faucet to see if the hot works at that location. – Ed Beal May 16 '18 at 17:36
  • This is a tanked water heater. The valve left on was the kitchen sink. Yes, the hot water runs in all rooms but just low pressure now. – Diann Smith May 16 '18 at 18:14
  • With low pressure in all hot water faucets and normal cold pressure it sounds like something is plugging the line into or out of the waterheater. Is there a check valve or expansion tank on the waterheater? (City supplied water system)? – Ed Beal May 16 '18 at 18:56
