I have recently installed two nest thermostats (the black gen 3, and white model E). The system is gas radiator heat wired to the model E via the usual Rh and W wires, and Rh, Rc, Y, G, W wired to the other one to control both heat and AC. I have no C wire.

Both thermostats emit a quiet electrical buzz, but it is definitely noticeable. This is happening whether heat is on or off. It stops if I take off the thermostat cover.

Any idea what could be causing this? Is this normal? Anything I could check for?

Thank you

  • Did you contact nest customer support yet? My experience with them has always been excellent. – Tyson Nov 3 '17 at 15:03
  • Nest support couldn't really answered that, except for that it is not expected behavior. Offered to replace, but I suspect it's not a faulty unit, because I have 2 that are doing the same thing. – John Nov 3 '17 at 16:52
  • noticeable how? are you placing your ear to it? Do you hear it standing 3' in front of it? Does it do it when the screen is not illuminated? – noybman Nov 4 '17 at 17:33
