I bought an old house, and I have a light fixture with two white wires and one black wire. I tested the wires, and one of the white wires and one of the black wires are hot, the other white wire (the middle one) does not register with my tester.

I tried hooking a led light with only two wires to the live white and black wires, but after hooking it up it will not turn on.

The switch it is on previously had a fan with a dimmer attached. Any ideas how to wire this up correctly?

That's not a legal or safe fan mounting. What is up in the box? – Harper Aug 19 '17 at 18:47
  • Yeah, where's the box man? Can you get us some closeups of what's inside that hole in the ceiling? – ThreePhaseEel Aug 19 '17 at 18:52
  • It is an old house...either there is no box, or it is covered up with the plaster. I took a photo from directly underneath. Is this something where I need to get an electrician out to deal with it? – Neil Aug 19 '17 at 19:45
  • for meeting code, you need a box. You can install one, but since you said it had a dimmer, we need to know about the supply end. Photos there too please – noybman Aug 19 '17 at 19:47
  • not to mention you want the romex to be secured in the box. theres some work to do there if there is no slack on the other side. Do you haveaccess on the other side? – noybman Aug 19 '17 at 19:49
