I am trying to replace an old ceiling fan. Instead of using a 3-wire for a light switch and a fan switch they used a 2-wire. The black hot wire was connected to the light switch on the fan and they used the neutral white wire as the other hot lead to the fan from the fan switch. So, there is no wire acting as a neutral wire to the fan/light combo and they cut the ground wire off in the switch box. How can I safely replace and rewire in a new ceiling fan/light combo with what I have here?

Can you post photos of the insides of the fan and switch boxes? Also, do you want independent control of fan and switch using two separate controls, or is it OK if you have control of both of them using the same switch? – ThreePhaseEel May 23 '17 at 23:31
