I have a question on using a GE switch with the add-on aux switch in a 3 way lighting situation. I've been staring at diagrams and thinking about it for hours now and I can't figure it out.

My home is wired like Option 3 and 4 here: http://www.easy-do-it-yourself-home-improvements.com/3-way-switch-wiring-diagram.html

The main switch is no problem and wires up like the rest of the switches. The aux switch though, there's only 3 wires:

White neutral

Red traveler

Black load?

The only way right now to make the light turn on, is if I connect the red and black wires directly in the aux box (without using the aux switch, and use the main switch as normal. The only way for the aux switch to control the main switch is if I don't connect the neutral, connect the traveler to traveler, and the black wire to the neutral on the aux switch. But this doesn't light up the light because the traveler and black load lines never connect.

Has anyone done this before? Thanks!

  • Can you post a photo of the inside of the box for the light? – ThreePhaseEel Dec 3 '16 at 16:34
