Is it legal for a group of volunteers to do the Will roof work for free on a churchdone by unlicensed volunteers pass code?

I live in Chicago, IL. I go to a church herein Chicago that needs a new roof for one of their facilities. Naturally, the church needs to gather a ton of money now in order to be able to hire some company to replace the roof.

My question is, is it legal for a group of volunteers to do the work for free on the church? The reason I'm asking this is because a church is a "public" facility to a degree and I know that for a private residence in ChicagoFor my own home, I can sign a Certificate of Responsibility where I take responsibilityit is my job to insure that all the work is up to code, etc. AlsoHowever, as a private citizen who would volunteer, for this; I'm not bonded, licensed, or insured in anything. Since the church is used by its members, do different rules apply?

AnyWill any work done by unlicensed volunteers pass code? Is it even OK for a group of volunteers to do roof work on a church? Do I have to be, or need a licensed contractor on site, to do roofs? Since the church is a public building, do different rules apply? Do I have to follow commercial code here?

I'd appreciate any suggestions are appreciatedtowards something I may have missed, things that I might 'get away with' or be eligible for, because it is a church.
