It's just less likely because of the ability to modulate over a broad range, and you don't notice it as much since they short cycle at minimum power when it happens. Ideally for most of the the more common season (heating or cooling) for the best efficiency and latent heat control you want to be in the modulation range as much as possible to avoid cycling at all. It's only a problem for obsolete bang-bang control A/C's, which run at 100% power or stop altogether. When the mini-split reaches target temp, it will slow down to a sustain speed, not stop, so the short cycle doesn't happen. | |

You must calculate how many BTUs per hour those structures radiate. Then you must also factor heat transfer from outside to inside. In summary, an 18K unit is small for a typical garage and will probably severely underperform for you use case. | |

Not only do you need to cool the air but also remove the thermal mass from the structure which requires far more BTUs than air cooling. Then there is the constant temperature changes which are terrible for the structure, walls, paint, humidity, mold, etc. For a garage, 18K might maintain temperature if ran constantly. An 18K unit will take several hours or more to cool down from 90 degrees. Factors like insulation, windows, sun orientation require many more factors than you are considering. | |

If you know which hour you plan to use the gym then consider getting a WiFi or bluetooth controlled unit so that you can adjust the climate 1-2 hours before use. | |
