Feb 28, 2023 at 18:02 | comment | added | FreeMan | It's possible that water is getting into the plumbing vent and running back down through the vent to the main drain of your house, except somewhere along the line, one of the glue joints in the vent system has failed, letting water out into your attic space. Once out, the water runs until it finds a way through the ceiling. It might only leak in a heavy rain if the failure isn't right at the bottom of the joint.

Feb 28, 2023 at 16:32 | comment | added | Ecnerwal | To clarify: You imply that the leaking room is on the lower floor (upstarrs shower checked as possible leak source) - what, exactly, is above the room with the leak? Do you have two levels of roof, or is the lower leaking room fully below an upper non-leaking room? Is the leak near a wall? is the wall exterior or interior? Are there windows above area of the leak? Details... please edit to provide more. Only leaking sometimes may mean it's wind-driven, or simply that smaller rain amounts merely wet but don't flow enough to drip. Merely wet will still rot things.

Feb 28, 2023 at 16:18 | comment | added | jay613 | What kind of construction is your house and roof? How old is the house, how old is the roof? What is the roof shape and material? Do you have gutters? Eaves? How old are the gutters if you have them?

Feb 28, 2023 at 15:37 | comment | added | RMDman | Get us a pic of the outside of your house, so we can get possible ideas as to where the rain may get in. Also, does this only happen when it rains hard? Maybe only in wind driven rain? Please update us.
