Nov 13, 2012 at 20:40 comment added Jeremy W. Sherman @maple_shaft That stuff looks gooey but doesn't feel it. I think maybe this is not the first time this trap has sprung a leak, and that mess is the result of prior patching. Anyway, the cast iron trap will be going away. :)
Nov 13, 2012 at 20:39 comment added Jeremy W. Sherman @Tester101 I think the PVC trap postdates the cast iron one. The cast iron trap appears to have aged the same as the rest of the drain piping, so I think it's original (1940s). I figure there probably wasn't a trap directly under the sink at one time, so the cast iron trap was the only trap.
Nov 13, 2012 at 20:38 comment added Jeremy W. Sherman @ChrisF "How do I fix my sink?" is too localized. I split it up into a few questions that I believe can be addressed individually, and that I hope are general enough to be useful to others searching later. I didn't even ask my original question (temporarily patching cast iron) because we already had a good question and answer addressing that.

Nov 13, 2012 at 13:21 comment added The Evil Greebo @ChrisF disagree - the other question is "what's good/bad about S traps" - this question is "should there be two traps on my line" - not related at all.

Nov 13, 2012 at 12:04 comment added maple_shaft @JeremyWSherman Is that P-trap shown in the picture... gooey? Or is this just an effect of the camera flash? If it is wet at all then it is probably damaged and should be replaced.
Nov 13, 2012 at 12:03 comment added Tester101 Maybe the cast iron P-trap was installed to prevent the siphoning in the plastic S-trap.
Nov 13, 2012 at 12:03 comment added ChrisF @maple_shaft - however, getting the "right" answer for each depends on knowing the other. The real question is something along the lines of "what, if anything, do I need to do with this drain under my sink?"
Nov 13, 2012 at 12:00 comment added maple_shaft @ChrisF Not sure I agree... they are seperate questions in my opinion because one is about a cast iron P-trap in the basement versus a plastic S-trap below the sink.
Nov 13, 2012 at 10:10 comment added ChrisF Is this the same drain as in this question - diy.stackexchange.com/questions/20700/…? If so then it's really the same issue and this information should be merged into the other question.
