May 1, 2020 at 2:59 comment added Harper - Reinstate Monica What makes you think it's not grounded? There are many wiring methods which cause no ground wires to be visible, and yet, they are grounded through the metal boxes and conduit. EMT, IMC, RMC, AC, FMC and many more.
May 1, 2020 at 2:43 comment added jsotola device that tells me whether the cable has current ... if there is nothing plugged into the outlet, then there is no current .... you probably have some device that detects the presence of voltage, and it really cannot be trusted
May 1, 2020 at 2:09 comment added ThreePhaseEel @Avrenim are you in North America? If so, are those two battery backup units on the same leg of the service, or on opposite legs?
May 1, 2020 at 1:11 comment added manassehkatz-Moving 2 Codidact What you are talking about is a non-contact tester. A real voltmeter (or more likely, and more useful, a multimeter) would be really helpful here. But if you are often showing values above 125 and you are in US/Canada (or any other nominal 120V area) then something is wrong. Very possibly a lost neutral.

Apr 30, 2020 at 23:29 comment added Avrenim However, I do have two small battery backup units and they typically show from 129 to 140, sometimes less.
Apr 30, 2020 at 23:27 comment added Avrenim Maybe I am not talking about the same instrument. What I have is a device that tells me whether the cable has current or not but it does not display a voltage measurement.
Apr 30, 2020 at 23:23 comment added ThreePhaseEel Can you get us some actual voltage measurements while this is going on please?
