You can test for a voltage too there should be something at least but that does not prove its any kind of useful signal. If you believe there is an issue with the providers cable - then connect your device right at their terminal (using a short as possible 5~10cm cable) in your house, call them out there is a problem. It is up to them then to sort it out if your device has no connection, especially if its a leased device or provided by them
Apr 20, 2019 at 14:34 comment added kbyrd So, let's say I've done these connection tests, up to the point where the cable company's coax enters my house. I suspect I'm not getting signal from them, but I'd like to be sure. Is there a way with a multimeter to detect: "it's likely cable company signal is present" vs "no signal". Maybe some small AC voltage will be present?

Jun 22, 2012 at 13:16 comment added Piotr Kula Ok :) Soooo you gonna need to find the closest point to where the cable starts working(ie has 0ohm on a terminated cable) repalce the broken bit and join it up again.. and viola.. PS is this Digital Cable or Antenna like Freeview Digital?
