2012 Moderator Election

Hi, I have been a member of the DIY.SE community for 19 months, visiting the site for almost all those days, and am a keen DIY'er for 24 years now, happily tackling most jobs from wiring (I have a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering), soundproofing, woodworking, concreting etc., and having tackled more major jobs when younger (demolishing and building aluminium furnaces was my favourite)

I have not been as active as some of the other nominees here, but I am an active mod over on Security.SE and a 70k+ user SE-wide and feel most of the skills, experience and behaviours are transferable, and am more than happy to put in the extra time to moderate fully here.

I am an easy going moderator, taking the gentle approach unless that proves ineffectual; confirming key decisions with the wider moderator group and generally trying to work with the community, following the community's guidance.

Hello! I'm Steven and I'd like for you to consider me in the 2012 Moderator Election!

I've been interested in home improvement and other DIY tasks since I was a young kid, helping my dad out anytime I could and breaking plenty of things along the way. Now that I am fortunate enough to own my own house, I've been steadily working on becoming the master of all trades by taking on all sorts of home improvement projects. My wife hasn't killed me yet, so that's always a good sign!

I think I'd make a great moderator because:

1. I've established a reputation of providing timely and high quality answers on this site
2. I'm university educated with strong verbal and written communication skills
3. I'm organized and reliable
4. I'd like to think that typically I'm concise and straight to the point
5. I catch off topic content and SPAM quickly

As a moderator my goals will include:

1. Ensuring that all questions and answers meet the SE guidelines by keeping content on-topic and appropriate
2. Making myself frequently available to respond to flags
3. Guiding new users to ask questions that will garner high quality answers by asking relevant questions

I think you should vote for me because...

• It turns out that I have more passion for DIY than anything else that I do.I visit Home Improvement more often than any other SE forum, read each post and try to help if its either a comment or a full answer with as much detail as possible.

• As a moderator I would make sure that answers are always answered as best as possible. This usually means helping new users out with asking question and making their questions as clear and precise as possible.. while at the same time trying to answer it for the.

• Whether I am at work or home I and have a few minutes I click my bookmark and read a few questions and try to answer or edit at least one.

• I hope that I am a familiar name to long term users of DIY SE and I hope you Vote for me.

I'd like to start by talking about what I do, instead of what I will do. Because I belive my actions thus far show just how much I enjoy being a part of this community, and what type of moderator I could be.

• Over the past two years, I've been active on both meta and in chat.
• Along with a handful of others, We have worked hard to get the blog up and running and to keep the content flowing.
• For better or worse, I tirelessly continue the campaign to improve question titles. Which has resulted in over 1200 edits.
• I support the community by voting, casting over 4400 votes.
• I strive to provide the most informative answers I can.

First, a bit of background. I've been a homeowner for over 10 years now, and before that, I would help out my dad with various projects around the house. I've picked up most of my construction skills by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and in the process have helped build over 40 homes. I also managed to get suckered into the board on my HOA, and I've gotten very used to trying to find the middle ground with conflicting views.

Since I'm not sure all of my stats are visible to the public, here are a few of mine as of July 25th:

• I've been visiting the site 471 days
• I've submitted 74 helpful flags
• I've cast 1,858 votes, 427 for questions, 1,431 for answers
• I've asked 6 questions and submitted 426 answers

My meta stats are a lot less impressive. Most of that is because the site seems to run so well with our existing mods. However, if elected, I'll add meta to my RSS feed so I don't miss any questions over there.

As for the great screw debate, I'm opposed to slotted screws.
