Can I repurpose existing cat5 telephone line for Ethernet networking? @TomG, I'm just expecting better than 23mbps :) I am going to re-test this evening with a different computer on the downstairs end -- I did a Netstress test which revealed >80mbps for RX and TX, which is terrific, yet file transfers are still dog slow for some reason. Thus I'm not trusting my testing so far. I'll repost or modify my answer as needed, after I test more. |

Can I repurpose existing cat5 telephone line for Ethernet networking? The cable is definitely CAT5e, it is labeled as such. Point taken on the splices introducing impedance issues. I wonder if crimping both ends and using a coupler would be better or worse? |

Can I repurpose existing cat5 telephone line for Ethernet networking? That's how I've been doing it. Or do you mean in the same room? Its close to full speed -- the hard drive read speed becomes the bottleneck then, or so I'm assuming. |
