I'm the sole developer for a publishing house, doing on-line courses and exams.

We have a web designer, who typically does layouts and courses, but I do anything that involves programming logic.

Depending on your area, code might specify that you have to go into a stud or beam. That is, any structural load needs to be taken to the structure, not the cladding (bricks).

comment Is this shower trap better than a P-Trap?
I know these are common worldwide. I also know that they are not to code in Canada. But I don't know why.

comment How do I properly insulate an attic ceiling?
Why are you insulating the roof? The roof is there to keep rain off the house. Insulation goes on top of the ceiling. That is, the temperature of your attic should be the same as the outside temperature. Unless you are trying to convert it to usable space. If you're using it for storage, you still don't need a heated space.

comment What do you do/ask when hiring a contractor
However, you can use this to your advantage in making a decision. A good contractor will ask you about these specs. up front. Do you want the roots removed? Do you want me to haul away the wood? Would you like the trunk cut up for firewood? All these questions would indicate to me that this contractor has done this type of work before. As a software developer, it is contingent on ME to draw the requirements out of the client, as I am the expert. I expect the same from a contractor.
