I'm the sole developer for a publishing house, doing on-line courses and exams.

We have a web designer, who typically does layouts and courses, but I do anything that involves programming logic.

comment convert a hardwired lamp to on off switch
Actually, it does. You just don't recognize it. Your problem: Replace hard wired lights, but can't find any with switches. Solution: Install a switch. Any messing around with lamp wire or jury-rigging other lamps is just wrong.

comment What could cause a battery hedge trimmer to have white smoke come out of it?
Usually white smoke means the Hedge Trimmer has elected a new Pope.

You can't run lamp wire through the wall. It's a code violation.

Some used to just glow behind the plastic.

My guess is that it's an illuminated cover, which no longer works. Turn power off, disconnect the two wires to the cover, and replace with a regular cover. While you're at it, you might as well replace the switch.

Pulling it off isn't much of a problem. Get one of these (i.stack.imgur.com/fdsyU.jpg) and gently pry it off. It's the re-install that will take some time.

You'll probably have to chip it out and re-do it.

comment How do I take a live wire off of a two way switch?
Also, on the breaker panel, I like to put a piece of masking tape on the circuit I've turned off with a big "NO!" written on it. Sufficient for household use.

I think Edwin was referring to the mounting box in the ceiling, not the panel.

Are you trying to remove the slab, or just the brick on top?

If it's reddish, it's copper. If it's grey, it's aluminum.

comment What material might be behind my old bathroom tile?
1948, either plaster and wood lath, or plaster and Gypsum Lath, which is similar to drywall, in 18" widths, covered in plaster. Seal all doors with plastic, wear a mask and goggles, and don't try to do it neatly. Just go to town on that stuff. (But watch for pipes!)
