comment Can I safely make a door frame taller?
What I ended up doing was removing the trim non-destructively. Above the door frame, it was clearly not load bearing, so I continued and was not so non-destructive. The end-result are doorways that are standard height (and I can walk through them without ducking.

@C.Lang Yes, the basement is accessible. It looks like there's just enough space to get a tube in there. Is conduit next to an air vent like that, possibly touching it, safe long term?

@maple_shaft yep, that was me. The previous owner clearly thought himself an electrician. He was also color blind. In a few places we can see previously layers of paint; pleasant colors like Blinding Canary Yellow and Hot Pants Pink. Makes me wonder how many times he was connecting two wires without knowing what color they were!

comment How do you remove Minwax stainable wood filler?
I've found that using a nice, sturdy nail (not your finger nail, obviously, an actual nail) works great for scrapping things that were used to fill in holes and cracks.

comment What could cause my ceiling fan light to go off after 2 seconds of being on?
Are you tripping a circuit or just the light is turning off?

comment Is it safe to have a gas stove on the same circuit as a couple lights
Definitely can cause nuisance tripping. Our fridge is on a circuit with an appliance outlet. It can handle one appliance at a time, but if you try using the microwave and the electric tea kettle at the same time, you'll trip it. Might happen less often with a newer fridge.

Not unusual for my house. Gotta love living in a house previously owned by an amateur electrician.
