How can I separate a light switch to power two different devices? Assume "full control of the fan" to mean ON-OFF control of the current and future fans with like features. |

What is better for a roof, plywood or OSB? @BMitch So you are saying that the plywood is solely/primarily for nailing (and re-nailing) effectiveness; the OSB for cost cutting; the per-se cutting of the OSB a mere irrelevancy--a red herring. Seems most plausible so I agree. The trimming of the projecting panels goes without saying. Thanks for the comment. |

What is better for a roof, plywood or OSB? @DAo1 like plywood, OSB has a top/finish side..that is even more water shedding that plywood. It is not uncommon to see OSB exposed to rain, no harm done, during roofing projects. |

What is better for a roof, plywood or OSB? Interesting...you missed the one, main disadvantage of OSB: its weight. Given the significant increase of lighter-weight plywood cost, most people eventually get beyond their hatred of OSB. |

What advantages do ridge cap shingles have over modified 3-tab shingles? I would be inclined to think also, that the aesthetic advantages of ridge cap shingles might call unwanted attention to the comparative ... paltriness of a single-ply, tab-shingled roof. |

What advantages do ridge cap shingles have over modified 3-tab shingles? the Q makes is sound like you're considering a 3-tab reroof: in which case you might be thinking in terms of conferring an advantage at the ridge upon a distinct disadvantage in the field. With the relatively rapid "aging" of tab shingles, would the cost of much more durable ridge cap shingles be money well spent? |

How is installing roof sheathing horizontally stronger than vertically? Thanks, Joe. I have read numerous @theevilgreebo posts and, accordingly, don't believe him to be strictly "dyi novice." (In fact I suspect his "challenge" might have been intended to be a bit greebulous (at worst), tongue-in-cheek (at best). That said, thinking of rafters as longitudes (just like on a map, sheathing oriented in line with them would be longitudinal/vertical. Tansverse was meant to indicate panels oriented with their longer dimension going across the rafters. My apologies for any inconvenences or head scratches cause by my posting. |

Should we replace shingles that are curling and losing the asphalt coating before winter hits? In very cold climes you need to stipulate fiberglass shingles (sometime they come mixed...but not total asphalt). Also, you need laminated shingles to prevent wind blow off, and curling. Tab shingles are so passe; and so unattractive by comparison. The extra cost more than pays for itself--you will see. |

Should a vent cap be installed under all the layers of shingles, or just the top most layer? I am not sure the OP mentioned a re-roof, only the roof jack (which with 3 reroofs already, likely shows as much or more wear than shingle layer one). That said, I would be inclined to let the urgency of a total reroof (of which code will not permit a 4th layer) be the determiner: if reroof is imminent, go down a layer or two, if long term, carve down to (but not in to) the felt and built back up to flush--which could be tricky to accomplish, maybe more so with laminateds? Alternatively, wouldn't screwing a pristine jack onto the existing be feasible if the reroof is very soon? |
