Troubleshooting a leaking exterior door you may be stuck pulling back the wall around the door. In my case that's easy as they used 1/8" board to cover the walls with. another method would be to seal the door off for the next storm from the outside and see if it leaks again. saealing a plastic cover to the siding about 4 " away from the door would prove whether it is the door that is the leak or another place the water is entering from. Since you have done all the right things to water proof that door/jamb I seriously doubt it is the source. all depends on the siding material and such. |

Potential wall socket fault I fail to see how that is not an answer to his question fluctuating grounds are a pain to find when its in the wall. as many runs span multiple rooms and you have to spend a bit of time to trace all the outlets attached to that 1 run by turning it off and seeing what stoped working. then start with the closest outlet on the line and verifying it tests as expected and move away from the source till you find an outlet that is not working right. pull the power and check the last working and first broken outlet to verify its not misswired some how. |

Potential wall socket fault his testers give no verifiable data on if it is good or not. the only proper way to get an answer to what hes talking about is to get meter readings. if the meter reads that all 3 test points are exactly as they should be then the outlet is good ergo the surge supresser is reading faulty. if the readings fluctuate or are not as they should be you can test the wires at the wall if they also are wrong/fluctuate then its in the wall/pannel. if its just cross wired after shutting the power off to the outlet you can correct the wiring direction. |

What's the standard height for an outlet? floor outlets are ok when they have a metal cover and are recessed but usually end up being a pain as you said. celing outlets are awesome as are using builtin spaces like cabinates etc. |

How can I convert Cat5e wired sockets to Ethernet? Never underestimate a stupid owner/installer. my water line had a 45 cap in it @ the ice maker T. get a volt meter after you have unpluged the line you think is going to that room an have some one call you while you have the meter attached. a phone could work as well. see if any other phones are not righing either and if the phone you expect to be dead is really dead. |

How can I figure out what mystery wall switches might do? also remember it could be switching a specific outlet or plug on an outlet. its not unusual to have the top plug to be the only one switched so that it can turn the floor lamp on and off for the room. |

LED lightbulb for outdoor, enclosed, timer-controlled porch light? some cfl and led lights dont fight the standard "light bulb" sizing... if you get a 150w cfl it can be 9-10" long or 3-4" round. even the smaller bulbs often are just a tad to big to fit through the hole in the globe or have a wide base that keeps it from screwing all the way in to a fixture that was designed for incandecents. Assuming no dimming is going on none should have issues with a timer. 1 is the biggest problem. not many bulbs can handel the cold well. I had outdoor cfls and they didnt last long and took 5 min to get going. |

Is this plastic pipe connecting city water to the main line dangerous? unecs after moving in to my house I have learned to assume nothing. slightly melted and warped pvc giving it the not straight look as shown in the photo, a 45 shell capping the ice maker take off... Since we dont have identification markings clearly visible who knows. |

Is this plastic pipe connecting city water to the main line dangerous? he may be afraid of the weight of the meter snaping the pipe and or bumping it etc. |

Is it possible to detect from the power outlet if there would be current that needs grounding? unfortunatly it is a common issue and can get quite serious. APC makes big bucks off of selling electrical audits to find these kinds of faults in businesses. wiring faults like that are likely to cause fires etc so the sooner the better. most of my house needed to be rewired when we moved in. they have things reversed at the wall some how the pannel was proper and the black wire went to the proper terminal on the outlets but the polarity was reversed its been quite a perplexing mess. |
