comment How does wood paneling compare to drywall?
I'll defer to the experts on this one but keep in mind that some regional building codes actually require drywall behind thin wood paneling anyway for fire-protection purposes.

comment Can I move the main breaker and the electrical meter?
@Spedge Costs are always a tricky topic because there's so many different factors involved (parts, permits, labor rates, etc). I'd suggest calling around and getting ballpark figures -- good electricians should at least be able to tell you a minimum. Also, beware of people that charge LOW LOW rates. Make sure they're fully licensed and bonded.

I completely agree! Aside from the possible involvement of permits and licenses, electrical main breaker work can be potentially dangerous.

comment How do I fix incorrect attic insulation?
I know it probably goes without saying but I thought I'd mention it anyway: 1) If the insulation is old, be sure to research whether or not it has asbestos in it. Tests are cheap these days. 2) Be sure to ALWAYS use/wear sufficient safety equipment (e.g. eye protection, appropriate breather mask, gloves, etc).

@tester101 - Agreed. A security system is something you want to be as isolated as possible. =)

comment What internet-connected home security system options exist?
I don't have an answer for you but personally, I prefer wired security systems simply because they provide slightly more physical control over access to the relevant systems. I think wireless management/integration via standard protocols would provide a larger potential for hacking (consider the security degradation of WEP and WPA over the years). On a somewhat related note, I'm intrigued with the potential of ZoneMinder surveillance. There's an interesting how-to article here: howtoforge.com/video_surveillance_zoneminder_ubuntu

Thanks! This turned out to be the case.

(sigh) That's what I figured. Thanks for the confirmation. =)

comment What are the consequences of building without a permit?
Yup. It varies greatly. In my specific county in the US for example, sections of the house can be "red tagged" which requires action to be taken before selling the house or letting too much time pass by.

@John Interesting! In that case, I'll defer to the gurus. =)

comment Is there a technique or tool for consistently placing drywall screws correctly?
All of the suggestions on here are outstanding but the dimpler bit was the easiest way to proceed for me.

comment Is it worth spending extra to get a nicer circular saw?
@Doresoom One criticism I've heard about Ryobi is that their stock saw blade is poor. Consider getting a new one if you buy it. Still a good value though.

comment Is it worth spending extra to get a nicer circular saw?
Agreed. If you're performing saw-related work on a daily basis, then DeWalt would be more appropriate. But personally, I've been happy enough with my Harbor Freight stuff. On a side note, I've heard positive reviews for Ryobi. That might be a good middle ground. homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xgl/R-100634339/h_d2/…

comment How to repair fallen tile near kitchen floor?
Just following-up. Your advice worked out great. I actually found a combination pre-mixed adhesive/grout at Home Depot that worked for both steps (not at the same time obviously).

Thanks! Great find on the grout-in-a-tube too. I was wondering about that =)

+1 for Belkin. I love mine but I'm also in a low-lighting region. newegg.com/Product/…-12-107-141--Product

comment Are receptacle surge protectors a practical solution?
I've never used one before but I'm a little skeptical. I couldn't find anywhere on the manufacturer's site (or amazon page) that describes warranty or reimbursement coverage. Granted that's those are typically very limited anyway.

comment What are the pros and cons of rolled-on wall/ceiling texture paint?
Thanks! Can you answer my other questions too? 1) What types of texture patterns are available using this method? 2) How do the finished results compare to other texturing methods? 3) Is there a noticeable difference in quality? 4) Is there a cost benefit for rolled-on textures?
