comment How much energy will continuously running a furnace fan use?
-1 This will yield a completely incorrect result as it assumes that the motor is a resistive load which it is not. The motor running at constant speed is predominantly a reactive load. You need to distinguish between real, apparent, and reactive power in order to determine the correct result. Using the method in the answer will give you incorrectly high results for fan power consumption because its power factor at running speed is much less than unity.

@gregmac As far as I can tell, in all cases in your tests above you are measuring current that is proportionate to apparent power, but not real power. Real, apparent, and reactive power are related but not the same. Your utility's watt-hour meter measures real power. When the fan is running at constant speed, it is most likely predominantly a reactive load with low power factor. So, you will read high current even though it is not using much power.

comment How much weight can you mount to a wall?
A limiting factor of wall mount shelves is their depth. This answer might help you figure out whether you need free-standing shelving or whether you can wall mount.

it seems like a more useful question along the same lines would be something like "What tools do I definitely need and which can I get away without for Project X?". Someone ought to ask that if it hasn't already.

comment What should I consider when designing a simple bookcase that will be built without power tools?
For insight into wall-mounted vs free-standing shelving, you might want to read my answer here. Remember that books are very dense (they hardly float in water) - they are the densest item I ever store in my home. Accordingly, you might want to work out how much weight you'll actually be storing and make sure your proposed shelving will actually support it.

I agree with shirlock. You are unlikely to be able to buy raw materials for less than it costs for a kit. I only build from scratch one I have exhausted all kit possibilities - and I already have tools and fasteners, etc.

@osc wrt the amount of weight you are storing. A safe shelf design would contemplate the maximum weight a haphazard combination of users are likely to store. Users do not think about how much weight a shelf can support when they put something on it - only whether it fits. That is why being volume-limited is preferable. Storage system collapse is common in industry. The scenario is usually that a shelf system gets overloaded and collapses because of a change of use a long time after it is built.

@osc I don't follow your logic wrt the existence of certain products meaning something about load capacities. In general, the load capacities of wall assemblies depend on a variety of factors - that is why there are tables of tested assemblies, architects, and structural engineers. Some structures are designed to support heavier loads by increasing stud size, density, etc. Most residential structures are designed to support the original construction only. Furthermore, the moment arm of the overhung load of your drywall scenario is an order of magnitude less than shelving would be.
