I work in bioinformatics, but activism is my hobby. I use Rails for writing tools for both.
I'm also a computer scientist by training (Virginia Tech Class of 2007), am fairly fluent in C++, and slightly less so in C.
I'm currently working on a Ph.D. in Cell & Molecular Biology at The University of Texas at Austin. Hook 'em!
My main platform is Ruby on Rails, and I prefer developing in Ubuntu.
Oh, and I'm the director of the SciRuby Project! Check us out. Sciruby.com. For that project, I'm currently working on writing NMatrix, a numeric matrix extension for Ruby in C.

What could cause an under-sink reverse osmosis filter to have low pressure? OH! Wow. That explains a lot. Okay, I depressurized it down to below what my bike pump could measure (<10Lbs). Was still hissing, but only a little bit. It looks like there's already flow through the filter faucet. I'll try again in the morning. |

What could cause an under-sink reverse osmosis filter to have low pressure? Yes. Replaced the membrane along with the filters. |

Two stroke engine throttle not working Yeah. I know. The paper version wasn't much better at the shop I visited this morning. I can take a picture this evening, I think, if I can figure out how to remove the gas tank. |

How many vent stacks should a house have? It turned out that roofers apparently cut off one of the vents in the wall just beneath the attic floor. It took forever to find and we had to tear out a closet wall to fix it. The kitchen sink has no vent at all, so dirty water backs up into the dishwasher a lot. Running the disposal helps. |

How many vent stacks should a house have? The faint line would be from where the previous owner didn't use the right color of paint. (Did you look at the picture?) |

Why do the oven and burners work but the pilot light won't ignite? @BMitch, they had also turned off the main valve for the oven/stove. There was no reason to turn off the pilot valves. |

How many vent stacks should a house have? Could this be the former location of a stack pipe? There's a faint line running up the wall, and it's about three feet from the kitchen sink. imgur.com/MLWqe |

Why do the oven and burners work but the pilot light won't ignite? It took a while, but I found the manual on Whirlpool's website. There's no thermocouple, as far as I can tell -- looks like the gas company turned off the pilot light valves for some reason, who knows why. So I was able to fix the stove, at least. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to turn the oven pilot light back on -- the directions are totally unclear. |

Why do the oven and burners work but the pilot light won't ignite? They turned off the gas because we had a corrugated gas pipe going through a wall elsewhere in the house. It wasn't related to the oven. I tried pushing in all the buttons for a good forty seconds, but no luck. |

Why do the oven and burners work but the pilot light won't ignite? They are not. It's an older appliance. Once the gas is turned on, we were able to light the burners with a lighter, but not the pilot lights. There just doesn't appear to be any gas flow to them at all -- nor to the one for the oven, even when we push the oven knob. |
