Should I have cavity wall insulation installed? What sort of insulation? Blown-in fiberglass? |

Is it a problem if the frame of my house extends 1 - 2" from the slab? 2 inches is more than one-third off the base of 2x6 framing. |

Should I purchase a hand driller? The least expensive hand drill I see on Amazon is just four dollars less than the least expensive cordless drill I see on Amazon. |

Why did my locked door open by itself? Ghosts? No, the answer is clear: the door wasn't latched. The pressure imbalance between the inside and outside prevented a full latch and it eventually blew/sucked open. |

How should I connect these beams to the posts? I would use the strong ties, and if aesthetics are a concern I would cover them with moldings. Let's say each strong tie costs $30, so that's $120 total... is that an expensive insurance policy against a weak post/beam joint? |

Is there a name for a duplex outlet that takes eight wires, plus ground? I don't know of a specific name, but I know that the Altus SSRE-6-WH10 (decora style) receptacle has the same pinout your pictures describe. |

How do I fix a hole in a hollow door? Repairing the door is not really cost-effective given the cheap price of doors. I would have me pay to replace the door and damage something of his (but that's a post for parenting.stackexchange.com) |

How do I deal with vapour barrier for central vac inlets in exterior walls? yes, melted the box (outside small brushfire). Perhaps this particular house had a fair amount of fuel in its vac canister. It's just something to be aware of. I don't know if they made tight-fitting metal housings but I'd consider one. |

How do I deal with vapour barrier for central vac inlets in exterior walls? Be very careful about defensible space around these inlets. We had a serious fire in my area recently and a very expensive stone house with a tile roof burned to the ground because the central vac inlet melted, turning it on... sucking and fanning embers and ash from inside the house. |

Are 2" roofing nails through the nailing fins of a new window enough to hold the window in place permanently? I improperly used the term "silicone" to describe weathertight caulking. Fair enough. I'd still use screws instead of nails, they just require more care when being driven (as do nearly all uses of screws). I suppose the OP asked if nails were sufficient to hold the window in place, and they are sufficient to hold it in place but my point was that they are not sufficient for a correct install. |
