comment What is the laziest way I can build a non-structural, non-aesthetic cinder block wall to contain compost?
Nice build! Three separately compacted lifts of crusher run gravel for a footing? I see some missed opportunities for laziness... You and I should never team up on a "simple" project. Your lazy compost box would have flood lights by now.

comment Backup sump pump discharge too big
Indeed. If anything the larger pipe diameter reduces the load on the pump by reducing the frictional losses in the pipe, and therefore reducing the backpressure.

comment Soundproofing a room so sound doesn't go out as much
Egg crate foam also doesn't do much for transmission of sound anyway. It cuts down on reflection, but not much for transmission. To reduce transmission 1) seal openings 2) add mass (heavier items vibrate less) 3) structurally de-couple ("float") walls and ceilings

comment Rebar cattle guard
Note that the rectangular tubing used in the photo will have far more bending stiffness than solid round rebar (per unit weight...1 1/4 rebar may get the job done, but that sucker is gonna be HEAVY and expensive, better to use appropriate tubing)

comment Methods for dampening condo floor noise?
Along with the mass-loaded-vinyl sheets described, another option would be for your downstairs neighbor to pull down their ceilings and re-mount them on resilient sound insulating channel. In essence, "float" their ceiling.

comment How should the concrete anchoring some fenceposts relate to the driveway they're puncturing?
Definitely not lower than the surrounding concrete or they will collect water which will accelerate the rotting of your posts and also exacerbate any freeze-thaw damage (if that's a concern in your climate).

comment How can I thaw a frozen exterior drain quickly?
I'd salt the drain. re: salt and driveway damage, as I understand it, any ice melt product increases the number of freeze-thaw cycles, which can accelerate the types of damage that freeze-thaw can create, such as cause cracks and potholes to grow, cause spalling of concrete, etc. Judicious use of salt or other ice melt won't destroy your driveway. Using only salt instead of any shoveling, thats's something else...I'd salt the drain.

comment Computing force over a range
thanks for the diagram. I still have some questions/concerns. 1) What is the purpose of the springs? 2) When you say "25 pound spring" do you really mean a 25 pound-per-inch spring, or are you saying that each spring will be guaranteed (by some other design feature) to exert 25 pounds of force on the bed frame?

A diagram of the planned bed frame would be very helpful here. I have some concerns based on what you described.

comment What causes a water heaters relief valve to discharge water?
re: monitoring the pressure, shouldn't the point at which you install the pressure gauge be at the same elevation as the T&P valve? The pressure on the second story is lower than the pressure in the basement (about 4.3 psi per 10 ft), you're interested in the pressure at the valve.

comment Can I reduce capacity of a cold water heater?
I think that you and Ariel are using different assumptions about how one would reduce the volume of the tank. Perhaps Ariel was considering the 'brick-in-the-toilet-tank' displacement approach, rather than the 'build-a-smaller-tank' approach. Neither is right or wrong.

@fredsbend the professional would presumably tell you what you don't know, i.e. where exactly the leak is, and what needs to be replaced.
