comment What is the proper hole size to drill through joists for wiring?
I assume you are talking about conventional dimensional lumber, not engineered beams, such as LVL or I-joists?

comment Bullnose vs square edge stair treads
And really square edged don't hold a finish or take well to carpeting or other tread covers. Finally, for us foot-draggers, they may also catch a brushed heel, which a rounded edge is less likely to do.

comment How do I drill a long hole lengthwise all the way through a post to make a standing lamp?
+1 When I read the question, splitting the post immediately came to mind, and, lo and behold, you answered it!

comment Manual garage door won't fully close
Be very careful when troubleshooting this problem. Garage door springs are very strong and disconnecting cables attached to them can result in serious injury.

comment What to do when snow blocks house door?
A chainsaw would be faster, and the wood chips could supply anti slip traction.

+1 You missed setting fire to the blocked door. (But DIY's lawyers might get nervous)

comment What can happen if someone doesn't get a building permit for a renovation?
@Tester101 Absolutely. In many residential areas, the penalty for failing to get permits is double the permit cost. If an unpermitted building is deemed unsafe, it may be ordered shut until the violations are cured, and that may await approval of the unsubmitted plans.

comment bypass waterfilter in refrigerator
Many refrigerators that have a filter also give you a bypass plug to use if your water is naturally pure or already filtered to a satisfactory degree.

comment Why are lights on 15 amp circuits and receptacles on 20 amp?
Because for 20 amp circuits you need heavier wiring (at least 12 gauge) which is more expensive, harder to work with and uses more resources to make, none of which is necessary for most lighting circuits and most outlets (except bath, kitchen, laundry and the like).

comment Can I put an outlet inside of a wall?
@Timbo Good point. I try hard enough to save energy other ways with LEDs and programable thermostats that I am wholly comfortable with vampire current.
