comment How can I safely cut the cable on a broken garage door?
+1 for being smart enough to recognize a difficult situation.

comment Previous owner filled in fireplace shelves with incorrect brick. Can I chisel them out?
An alternative is to tile or put a thin brick facade over the entire existing brick wall. It would add about 3/4 inch or less.

comment I need some type of ceiling in the downstairs bathroom that will allow me access to the pipes.
There are also vinyl tin-look panels that give a similar appearance but are more water resistant.

comment What could cause two of my receptacles to stop working?
Occasionally breakers do not look like they have tripped when, in fact they have. Did you try to turn off the breaker and turn it on again?

comment How to get experience handling power outlets without electrocution?
If that was really said, IT IS VERY BAD ADVICE. Touching a hot wire can lead to serious injury and death, even for a pro. No do-it-yourselfer should handle a circuit with the power on. Period. [Please tell me this is an April 1 jest.]

comment Best Technique to Achieve Perfect Cut-Outs in a 2x4
A 2x4 seems not deep enough for a decent handhold. Also, if you cut more than about 30% of the width (maybe even less), you will seriously compromise the strength. The boards illustrated look to be at least 6 inches wide.

comment Hooks for floating shelves
There is a discussion of hanging loads on plasterboard here. Whatever you do, do NOT use stick on hooks.

comment how do i get power to my dual switch without being controlled by the main light swich?
It sounds like you had three way switches by the door and toilet and you have replaced one of them with a pair of single pole switches. There are a number of wiring possibilites. Can you show us a picture of each of the switch boxes as currently installed?

comment What type of bolt should I use to maintain a movable joint?
You also want washers between the two pieces of wood that rotate against one another. Two if they will fit. Also, if exposed to weather (especially dampness) consider stainless steel.

comment Is it safe to put insulation next to knob & tube wiring?
The only downside is that handling K&T often leads to further deterioration of the insulation on the parts that are left.

The biggest risk is that it doesn't meet current standards or code. Be sure to check with your local building authority.

comment Trying to secure a 100lbs floor mirror so it doesn't tilt over. is it possible to do this without a stud?
@shirlockhomes The version that just spreads leaves me a little wary since they are similar to the old plastic anchors. But there is a twist in version that pushes a pivoting bar horizontal that looks like the best of both worlds. I'll have to try that on my next project.
