comment How to fix a sewer pipe leak in a prefab concrete floor
if you were confident about the composition of the pipe, you could use the solvent appropriate to the material. The blockage in the pipe is far from ideal, but it may never clog, and if it does, you are no worse off than you are now.

@DaveTweed Excellent point if he is confident only the lower section was punctured.

@AloysiusDefenestrate What I was suggesting is moving your comments to an actual answer. Comments eventually get deleted.

comment I have an exterior water tap for a garden hose that needs new caulking
+1 Or you could chock it with something inert, like scraps of plastic molding, or other rigid plastics.

comment Safety of 3-Way Lightbulb That Exceeds Max Wattage Only On Highest Setting
@Johnny You are definitely right in principle, but I have seen scores of one ways put in three ways and vice versa, and never seen a short between the two filaments or the hot an neutral. A low risk situation, I think. But obviously the right thing is to use the right bulb.

@AloysiusDefenestrate Sounds like a good answer. (But I thought you only did windows?)

comment Why does my garbage disposal have a 3 way switch?
+1 @TomG Of course! I didn't see the backstab in the first picture. Makes total sense. (I've always hated backstabs, so it didn't even occur to me.)

The picture looks like three separate terminals on the switch. Were there versions with a hot tap built in?

comment How can/should I mount this porch light?
@Tester101 Cedar clapboard, a cedar block, serious craftsman carpenters (and a builder who is a personal friend) working to match the existing 1869 (with a 1905 reno) farmhouse. They done good.

comment How can/should I mount this porch light?
@Tester101 I had them build the platform and cut the hole. I put the box in before I wired up the fixture.

comment Framing a window directly through a post in post-and-beam construction?
Post and beam is so far from everyday construction techniques that use of anything but an engineer's analysis just seems wrong. The kings and jacks at the sides, and hte loads they support are totally different from conventional stick construction.

comment Max gap size for effective drywall joint compound
+1 Also the OP may want to try to make sure that the patch is fairly level with the surrounding wall. The edge on the left of the picture looks a little low. A thin shim behind the patch could be used to level.
