comment Could power fluctuations have killed my refrigerator?
You could try, briefly, but one bad outlet or multitap is unlikely to be the source of a whole house flickering. And voltage spikes are bad for electronic equipment. That's why they invented surge protectors.

comment What to do about hot neutral in switch?
+1 And if the white wire is used as a switched hot, mark it as hot by putting a black stripe on it using a marker, or wrap a small black piece of tape around it, to avoid future confusion.

comment Unplugging Alarm System
Most likely yes. But if you are talking about indoor motion detectors, they don't do anything until you already have an intruder on your property. How do they help? If you want an alarm system to frighten thieves, it is usually possible to remove the dial-out system and have a local only alarm. But you will now need a pro to put back together the sections you broke.

@longneck To echo and expand on your comment, IF the foil facing is intact, and there is no sign of friable material that could be spread by the radiator's natural convection.

+1 Simple, elegant. (And I slap may forehead and say Doh!)

But where does that red one come from? Not from the left switch that only has black wires (which you think originally controlled the fixture - could you be mistaken about what it did before?)

What does the remote control module instructions say about which remote module wire wire to connect to the AC line in?

comment Installed Ceiling Fan, Now Light Switch Not Working Properly
Red is hot, and probably switched. Green is ground. White is neutral. If the old fixture went on and off with the left switch, there has to be another junction somewhere since the left switch only has black wires. Also, it is unusual for a fan that is using one hot line to the remote control to use a red instead of a black. The fan instructions don't mention the remote unit. Is there a separate model number for that remote receiver unit?

comment How to repair a microwave door with a broken spot weld
@wallyk There are all levels of skill when it comes to repairs, and many of our readers would have the ability to tackle this safely. But there are some things, if screwed up, have very dangerous consequences. Having a rank amateur handle a main electrical panel is a bad idea. While the risks of microwaves leaking are small. If there were a compromise of the door seals, there is a risk, albeit small, of a very bad exposure, especially with prolonged exposure near the device. It's hard to control for level of skill, pattern of use. Better safe than sorry. You are free to disagree and answer.

comment Running a new kitchen light circuit from a receptacle with a “traveller.”
The screws holding the red and black wires each have a small brass plate under them. Is there a brass tab connecting those two terminals (it may have been broken off)?

comment Do I need a permit to renovate a porch in NYC?
Most jurisdictions have something like a certificate of existing use for structures built before Cs of O were required. When you try to sell you may need a cursory inspection to make sure it's not a deathtrap, but nothing like a full blown C of O inspection. You may need a C of O for any new work done post building code.
