comment Completely removing/hiding wall switches
I understand that you have too many switches and you do not like them. But I am not clear what you want to do and what you are asking us? If you shrink the box size, you need to do drywall work. You cannot lose the box unless you can remove all live cable connections at the box, which probably requires rewiring.

You also may be increasing your risk of a lightening strike.

comment Can I use 1/2“ fire-rated drywall instead of 5/8” type-X in a commercial application?
This site suggests that there is 1/2" fire rated drywall, but every jurisdiction has its own rules.

comment Lamp not working
Consider replacing with LED rather than CFL. More efficient, longer lasting, less dangerous materials upon disposal.

comment How should I end this wiring?
@Tester101 I think we need a write up on the current code and the use of these splices, both the rules and best practices.

comment How should I end this wiring?
+1 The code does allow this type of splice. But as Tester101 says, the circumstances are limited and it is generally considered a last resort solution. If you expand your answer to give the code cite and the circumstances of use, this would be a helpful answer.

comment How to keep bird away from leaving their droppings on the deck
Bird diapers are great, but the difficulties in getting them to use them regularly is significant. A clean diaper/bird seed exchange program sometimes works, but it is an uphill battle.

comment What kind of wood should I use for this job
With the right undercarriage, 1/4" of balsa wood would suffice. We need much more information.

comment Installing ceiling fan and light
We need more information. The extra wires may be switch wires or they may be hot leads going to another fixture or outlet. How was the old fixture wired? Do you have a multimeter or a non contact tester?
