comment What could have caused these cracks, and how can I repair them?
Besides photos, also tell us what might not be seen in photos, such as the wall material and underlying structure, if it's a bearing wall, etc.

comment How should I hang two single swings on an apartment patio?
Assuming the issues Chris W raises are addressed, a 4x4 would be fine if it is not spanning too far. The critical detail is exactly how the 4x4 is attached to the existing structure and exactly what that structure is.

comment What problems could be caused by putting mains water in to the pipe from a shared water tank?
I'm assuming you are removing the tank supply, not connecting to it in addition. You don't mention what sort of piping is used for the tank supply. The only issue I can imagine is if the piping cannot handle the presumably higher mains pressure. Usually tanks are installed when mains supply is inadequate (due to pressure and/or volume), can I assume this situation has resolved itself? If the piping is up to current standards you should have no problems if the supply is adequate.

comment Fix lead joint between cast iron and galvanized steel plumbing pipes?
A lead and oakum cast iron joint continues to be an acceptable way to make up cast iron joints under most codes, though everyone now makes up clamped no-hub joints. Hard to do if you have an existing hub fitting! Melting the lead in place is not a good idea, you cannot be sure everything is fully molten, the surface will look good but you will have a faulty joint. If you do chose to work with molten lead, wear appropriate protective equipment and only handle it in well ventilated areas.

comment How do I wire a new ceiling light from an existing fixture?
And is the new light to be controlled by this existing switch or switches, or does the new light need to have its own switch?

comment Diswasher drains completely after cycle, but after sometime there is a little bit of water at the bottom
The drain must run past a high point or air gap, so there is always some waste water in the drain tube that does not drain off. There is typically a backflow valve to keep it from draining back into the washer, but if the valve flap seal is perished or there is food stuck in the mating surfaces, it will leak so that waste water from the drain tube will eventually drain back into the washer.

comment Drywall Type for Conditioned Basement
It depends on your specific conditions. If there is very little chance of any dampness, there is no need. If there is a chance, then it is probably worth doing. In the overall scheme of things, the moisture resistant board is not all that expensive.

comment In kitchen reno, can I make the kitchen ceiling same height as rest of dining room?
It is possible the whole drop ceiling is just a design choice in order to have flush panel lighting, in which case it all could be removed. It is quite likely a more difficult to remove item is being hidden. There is only one way to find out, cut some access holes and have a look. Try to cut in ways that are easy to patch in case it all needs to stay.

comment Using a 30-amp tandem circuit breaker for a 120/240v circuit?
If I understand your description correctly, the only flaw here is the handles of each leg need to be tied together so that if one leg trips, the other side is shut off as well. I would like to see a picture of the installation before making a final determination.

comment How can I avoid excessive junk on inside junction, when cementing PVC sprinkler pipe?
It appears the primer is overly softening the fitting plastic. Apply primer to the pipe first and use only enough of both primer and cement to fully cover the mating surfaces. Try to work quickly once the primer is applied.

comment Are these joists deep enough for the joist spacing / beam spacing I am planning on my deck?
My initial sense is you are within the range of reasonable, but I'm not used to layouts at this scale. We would need more information to make an accurate determination. If your area receives any snow we need the design ground snow load for your area. We also need the grade of the lumber or the maximum unit bending and shear stresses and the modulus of elasticity.

It is as Tester101 says, there is a problem with the downstream wiring.
