Nov 20	comment	Can I safely ground a light fixture if the ceiling box has two hot and one neutral wire (no ground wire) @Tester101, the tester I used (similar one linked below) blinked and beeped faster on the red wire before I cut the switch. I did this twice, as it seemed odd- same result. It stopped doing anything on the black once I cut it, as I expected. And no, I was installing a light, but there was no fan there before. Black is not hot when the switch is off. The red still showed hot with the switch off, although oddly, the signal was weaker, but that might just have been picking up something from the nearby black when the switch was on?
