I'll confess to having done this, as I couldn't think of another alternative that I could actually bring myself to do, but I'm not sure how humane it is - drowning seems like a pretty awful way to go. I actually found the struggle very upsetting.

@Tester101, the tester I used (similar one linked below) blinked and beeped faster on the red wire before I cut the switch. I did this twice, as it seemed odd- same result. It stopped doing anything on the black once I cut it, as I expected. And no, I was installing a light, but there was no fan there before.
