Let's just be clear that quite a number of builders and repairmen stocked up on the "good stuff", e.g. soon to be banned lead paint, which may have ended up in houses built after 1978. 1978 is not in fact a fully magic cutoff date for danger.

The GFCI solves the "three prong plug" problem without a ground plug. One reason you might want a real ground is if you have computers plugged in, and want maximal protection from a surge protector.
