comment Should I use a GFCI or AFCI circuit breaker with knob and tube wiring?
@Tester101 it's still a nuisance trip. Agreed on the eventual harmony between devices and AFCI's.

comment Identifying a bulb from a 1969 built light fitting
Are you sure it's not threaded. Stick your hand down there to the ceramic part. It looks like a totally standard Edison base, if threaded.

@Tester101 I am the source. The vacuum appears normal, is owned by the house cleaner. I have not put an oscilloscope to the line, at least not yet. The house lights don't dim or anything. The vacuum is presumably used every day.

@Tester101 here's a source dated August 2014: every time the cleaners come they trip our AFCI with their vacuum (a generic Kirby HEPA canister). The AFCI was purchased new in 2012.

comment How can I avoid excessive junk on inside junction, when cementing PVC sprinkler pipe?
The cement was brand new. Eventually with some practice I was able to make good joints. Early joints I think I rotated the pipe too much while it was all wet.

comment Do I need an electrician to install a whole house surge protector?
Actually: Type 1 are designed to connect on the main side of a breaker, Type 2 require a breaker. Neither protect against direct strikes. Both offer similar levels of protection, and there are dual certified units available. See also: diy.stackexchange.com/questions/28138/…

comment What features should I look for in a full-house surge protector?
I'm afraid this answer while well meaning, is completely off base. A whole house surge protector does not operate inline to a circuit, and thus calculating "total amps" does not make sense. Instead there's a clamping voltage and discharge current, which protects the entire panel regardless of amps.

Surge protection accounts for voltage spikes as from lightning. Voltage fluctuations are a different manner and required power conditioning instead.

In this case the association is just four families: they can collectively solve this problem for all the units.

+1 on "rebooting" the unit. Also disassemble and check for water on the circuit boards.

comment How can I replace a tilt up garage door, with near zero clearance, low overhead?
We DO want an opener, so we can cycle straight into the garage.
