comment How to install this cheap metal curtain rod?
I would expect there to be brackets to hold the ends of the rod, and they hooks are to be used periodically along the length of the rod for extra support in the middle. But that's a guess.

comment Why won't my ice maker shut off?
Most have a little arm that is raised as the ice level increases. Is this working? Check the arm, the switch, and the valve it controls - one may be broken. Or the water line may have a leak in it.

comment How can I electrically test an RJ45 plug?
if your ethernet jack is sparking, I'd report it to your RA or maintenance. If they don't want to investigate, tell them you're calling the fire marshal.

comment What alternate ways are there to get into a garage when you don't have the opener?
I don't think the lock is the issue - they need to disengage the opener mechanism to manually open the door, which you can't do if you're locked out

You might call a local garage door installer and ask for suggestions. But essentially you need to get into a locked building with no doors or windows - you either have to break something or cut a hole in something.

comment Is tying a knot in an electrical wire safe?
If the wire is under tension, over time the insulation will wear, creating a hazard.

comment How can I make use of this non-standard network cabinet in my garage?
Have you considered just ripping it out of the wall and putting something standard sized in it's place? And that's not a patch panel, it's an equipment/network cabinet.

comment How to repair this metal corner siding?
he means slide the top edge of each cap under the lip of the row of siding/cap above it. This way each cap will overlap the one below it, the same way each row of siding does.

comment What's a nifty way to restrict my dog run without re-installing it?
is the line nylon/rope, or a cable? Browse around your local hardware megastore and you will probably find a variety of stays and clamps that you can attach to a cable. They may also work with a rope. Another option might be to take a length of PVC or garden hose, slit it to slide over the rope, and use that to create a stop before they reach the tree.

comment How can I remove large nails from cement?
get a Dremel rotary tool (or something similar) with some grinding discs and just cut them off. It's probably cheaper than a dedicated grinder

You think that sounds like more pain than tearing up the walls to run new electrical?

get some battery operated lights you can mount on the walls without running wires.

comment How do I shut off the ceiling fan without a pull chain?
Replacing a fan is usually fairly easy, and not too expensive. That might be as easy as replacing the switch.

comment How do I clean ballpoint pen marks from an LED TV screen?
my daughter drew on our tv with crayon, I used one of those Magic Eraser thingies to clean it off - worked great, didn't seem to harm the TV any. www.mrclean.com/MagicEraser - I think we buy the generic kind

comment How can I get low water pressure in sprinkler system fixed?
That sounds like a pretty bad (or lazy) plumber. You might try calling a sprinkler company and getting an estimate for fixing it, and then giving that to your builder. It doesn't seem like the people he sends out are very qualified.

also, do you have a master valve for the sprinklers? Have you verified that it's fully open?

comment How can I get low water pressure in sprinkler system fixed?
Did they check that the pressure going into the sprinkler system was OK? If it is, then my guess would be either a leak, or there is dirt/debris caught in the lines somewhere. Does it impact all zones equally, or just some of them? They probably need to start digging up the lines and test them, or just replace them.

comment Should we turn our oil hot water heater off every night?
I would think it takes a lot more energy to heat the cold tank every day than it does to maintain the temperature after it's heated. Plus you would wake up every day with no hot water.

comment How do I “un-winterize” my sprinkler system?
my guess would be the 4 smaller ports on the manifold were left open to allow water to escape in case of a freeze. Not sure what their primary purpose is. I'd close them, then open the two blue valves.

comment When to stop putting out mouse traps?
if they are hoarding dog food, clearly peanut butter isn't their only source of food. I'd set traps until you go a few days without catching anything, then stop, but ask the dog to tell you if anyone is mooching his food :-)
