I'm a scientist in Colorado. I bought my first house, a 1950s ranch-style house, in February 2012.

comment How can I protect my fingers while using a band saw?
Having been subjected to this awful game, I feel the need to point out that the answers so far seem to be focused on the square game pieces but the question is about safely cutting out the tiny figurines atop them in the photo.

comment How to repair a giant hole in plaster over drywall (maybe ?)
I have the same bizarre wall construction in my 1955 house. It's plaster on gypsum lath, which was sold under the trade name Rocklath. It's like drywall, but comes in much smaller sheets (see the seam in your second photo) and is full of holes.

comment What type of switch is this?
PA66 identifies that the switch is made of polyamide (nylon) 6-6, so probably isn't necessary to uniquely identify the part.

comment Would a radiant barrier help stop this heat transfer?
Aluminum has quite a low emissivity and high reflectivity in IR, so the camera will not tell you it's actual surface temperature unless it is taking these into account. You can test it by putting a piece of aluminum tape on a glass window: the tape will quickly be the same temperature as the glass, but will look much cooler.

Ordinary wire nuts are acceptable for joining ground conductors: NEC 250.8(A) "Equipment grounding conductors... shall be connected by one of the following means: (1) Listed pressure connectors..."
