I'm a scientist in Colorado. I bought my first house, a 1950s ranch-style house, in February 2012.

comment Wires barely fit in gang box, is this okay? If not, where to get deeper boxes?
I understand it might be too late, but you could have used one GFCI receptacle at the beginning of each run, wiring the ordinary receptacles to the "load" side of the GFCI receptacle. They would still all be protected.

comment Can I use romex in my unfinished, detached garage or should I use MC?
It's better to ask "is this NEC compliant" because, other than which edition is being used, the NEC does not depend on location.

comment Is peel and stick vinyl tile flooring really waterproof?
This one is specifically recommended for use in bathrooms and its "100% waterproof construction prevents warping, mold and mildew." The instructions do say that it is waterproof and "not a waterproofer," suggesting the floor underneath needs to be free of moisture problems.

comment How long should the hot water last during a shower?
@Tester101, yes! The tank-temperature dependence appears in both the hot water flow rate from the water heater and the cold water flow rate to the water heater. They cancel out.

Note that the comment establishes a second stopping criterion of 80°F, which introduces a second phase that is constant-flow-rate instead of constant-power. This becomes a first-order ODE which is easy to solve but not as easy as the constant-heat version.

comment What is the proper way to pass NM cable through drywall above ceiling level?
@Tester101 the OSB is roof sheathing; there is not a top plate at that location. This is the bizarre and probably incorrectly made joint between two additions, viewed from the side of the newer addition.

@keshlam it just looks sloppy, I guess, and like the cable is pinched.

comment Why do I have a green light on my GFCI but the outlet will not come on?
I have some GFCI receptacles where the light means everything's okay and some where it means there's a problem.
