I'm a scientist in Colorado. I bought my first house, a 1950s ranch-style house, in February 2012.

What should I check when troubleshooting a doorbell? Doorbell transformers usually output AC. Be sure the meter is in the AC voltage mode. |

How can I replace the roller mechanism on this door? Are there any markings on the door to identify the manufacturer? I am also trying to find such a door. |

How can baseboards be attached to a plaster-on-masonry wall? Thanks for your opinions. I've had only terrible experiences with construction adhesive so I'd like another option. In fact, my experience is the opposite: I've seen EVA (same substance as HMA) stay pliable after 30 years of outdoor exposure in direct sunlight and construction adhesive hard and brittle after <5 years indoors protected between layers of construction materials. |

How can baseboards be attached to a plaster-on-masonry wall? If HMA sticks the baseboard to the paint instead of the wall, why would these products behave differently? |

What is the sheathing underneath my brick exterior walls? My house looks the same. The bizarre plaster-upon-drywall concept is called "rock lath." |

How should I prepare a plywood subfloor for floating vinyl plank flooring? Thanks for your answer; the last sentence is what I'm looking for. Just a few drops of water cause bare plywood to swell up until it dries out. I'm worried about this being trapped underneath the flooring where it'd dry out much more slowly. The idea with the Kilz was to prevent the plywood from absorbing the moisture. |

How should I prepare a plywood subfloor for floating vinyl plank flooring? @DavidMoore, I'm so happy to hear about your scientific approach. I'm interested in the complete results from your test, but I guess I got lucky and chose the winner on the first try. |

How to narrow a closet door opening? Yeah, you'd use a pair of 24" doors; they'd overlap 4" when closed and the maximum opening would be 20". This is not ideal but is way easier than changing the size of the opening. And narrowing the doors is always an option. |
