comment Is it more economical to use hot water before boiling or to bring cold water to a boil?
It is irrelevant, not because it referred to children, but because of the rather callous or thoughtless nature of it - an insult toward the state of parenthood does not provide any useful information.

comment How can I tighten a bolt in a circular hole?
@DanNeely Unless it's a hammer drill, the chromed sockets should be fine.

comment How do I install cabinets on a floating hardwood floor?
So, kind of building legs or pedestals for the cabinets so they ride slightly above the floor surface? That should work.

Tile is slightly different because it is typically cemented down, not floating. However, in every case I can think of, the island would be attached directly to the subfloor, not through the tile or wood surface. For new construction, this is usually done by installing the cabinets first, then the flooring is installed around them. For existing construction, cutting away the hole for it to sit in seems like the best option.

@bshor - I agree, they were great lights. I guess this is a case where public perception won out over common sense and fact?

You're sure it's wood underneath? That sounds more like you're hitting metal or concrete.

comment How do I select a color to paint various rooms in my home? What color guides are best?
Sherwin Williams has the same thing. But Behr paint is probably (marginally) less expensive... :)

comment What are some recommended cordless trimmers/weed-eaters?
I had a cordless back in the day when the batteries were big, heavy, expensive lead-acid affairs that never held a charge for more than 30 minutes and usually only lasted 1-2 years. Li-Ion definitely sounds promising. :)

comment What do you do/ask when hiring a contractor
On the other side of things, if it looks like they just loaded up their toolbox down at Lowes, they probably don't have much experience either...

If you know people in related industries, ask for referrals. For example, a friend of mine from our church is a high-end builder, and I've had "his" electrician and roofer out before to look at various issues.

comment What is the best way to demolish a little brick wall?
@gnovice - If you started well away from the wall - the front face or near the front corner - you'd have plenty of room to swing without hitting anything important. Plus, the weight of the hammer will do most of the work for you without a major swing.

Installing a flat-screen TV over the fireplace, something like this is mandatory. :)
