comment How do I replace a garage door spring?
We did have a pro do the replacement (easily, affordably). Funny story: He has two young, active boys and occasionally ends up in the emergency room with one of them or the other for typical little-boy stuff. He says that literally every time he is in the ER, there's someone there who injured themselves replacing a garage door spring.

There's a 1/8" steel cable running through the inside of the intact spring on the other side; I assume that's there to limit the damage that might be done should the spring break while under tension.

KeithS, they are above the tracks for the door along the ceiling. There is an opener connected to the center of the top of the door.

BMitch, there is an opener, and I was pretty sure that the release handle was pulled before I tried to lift the door. Are you suggesting that the door isn't all that heavy and I should be able to get it up anyway? It is possible that I missed something.

The replacement spring I bought does not seem too scary, but I have not really monkeyed with it.
