comment Who do I call to approve minor interior structural changes to my house?
Or hire a competent contractor for $35/hour for a simple job. For what one pays for an engineer, they could hire out the whole job.

comment Possible to flatten warped wood?
I think that you are thinking of a planner not a jointer for this lumber problem. A planner is used for flattening the wide face of lumber and a jointer is for truing the narrow edge. a planner takes the whole piece of lumber in under pressure and plains one wide surface. Depending on how cupped the lumber is, a planner may work after a few passes on each side, but the thickness of the board is going to be smaller.

comment What are the advantages and disadvantages of elastomeric coatings versus shingles?
not sure what product you are talking about. Up here in the north we use Grace for a shingle underlayment. Most elastomers are in a liquid form and come in 5 gallon buckets.

comment How do I remove surface rust from a metal roof?
be careful using chemical rust removers. They can damage painted surfaces as well as remove rust. A rotary wire wheel on a drill is a good way to buff rust off. Cover the bare areas quickly with something like rustoleum primer for rusted metal, then paint with an epoxy type paint.

comment Is plastering a job best left to the professionals?
Hey BMitch, I've been doing drywall mudding off and on for 20 years, I'm not bad, but I can't hold a candle to the subs I hire. It is an art form!

Also give them a shop vac to get all the sand out of the surface. When they are done, congratulate them with a new basketball!

comment Unused electrical duplex box, soon to be hidden behind a bookcase?
Practically speaking, since the bookcase is so large and will be attached to the wall, it becomes part of the wall and would be obstructing the box. The box needs to be accessible if there are any hot wires in it. i like the idea of extending the box and making it protrude into the bookcase, or have an opening or panel that makes it easy to access the box if needed.

comment How can I find a replacement screw/bolt?
Your question is way to general to answer. Why not just take the stand to the hardware store and ask a clerk to help you find the right replacement?

comment Filling deep gaps at corners of maple flooring
Sure sounds like a sloppy job. there are caulks especially for matching wood floor colors. you could use them, but I would be screaming to have it done right. Guess you learned that you normally get what you pay for. sorry.

comment Is this vertical gap in the concrete block foundation something to worry about?
small cracks in block foundations are pretty common on a house that age. I always look at both sides if possible and especially look for how much the blocks have displaced. Usually not a big deal if there is little to no displacement.

comment How do I remove this exterior Water Valve cap?
Jack is right, don't mess with it. Even though it is on your property, it is owned by the water company and they will hold you responsible if you damage it. The piece you are prying on actually screws on and off with a special wrench.
