General Building Contractor, Certified Home Inspector and Licensed EPA Renovator. I am winding down my years of pounding nails, building custom homes and additions, renovating kitchens and bathrooms, and converting cellars and attics into beautiful living spaces. I am doing more and more home inspections as my bones age and my back gives out. Now I find it easier to look objectively at home structures than to build them. My goal here on Stack Exchange is to help DIY'ers do it the right way and share my years of building experience with them. I may not always give the most popular answer, but I will always give my best informed advise.

comment Weight limits on pergo flooring
There are no weight limits on flooring that I have heard of. I don't think there is any furniture that is too heavy for Pergo flooring.

comment Can I glue a second layer of drywall?
I just got done gutting a manufactured house with glue and screws. That glue works well and is very strong. I think they used it to place the rock before screwing it off. Definitely made demo a lot harder.

comment Is there a more rugged finish than Polyurethane for a heavy use table?
I have never been a fan of water base urethane. Not impressed with it.

sand it as best you can, then try a small area where there may still be some water based by putting a little oil base over it and look for a reaction the next day. You may luck out and be able to use oil over what little water base remains.

comment How can I fix this gap in my kitchen counter?
is this a new gap, or has it been there right along and caulk filled before? Is the counter level now?

I haven't got a clue what that is. Wonder if it is manufactured housing? Rip it out!! +1 for impunity! LOL

comment How to get rid of moisture in hardwood flooring?
You certainly can run a dehumidifier in the interim with hopes it may lower the moisture level, but i doubt it will be a long term fix and I bet the problem will come back again and again. The job was not done properly to begin with, so you don't have a lot of options if the contractor won't stand behind their work.

comment Make new walls match thickness of old walls
You have three choices, 3/8", 1/2" or 5/8", pick the combo that makes the best sense in your situation.

comment How to get rid of moisture in hardwood flooring?
Looking at the pics supplied, it sure looks like there is substantial cupping across the entire floor. I would not even try to salvage this wood. It is junk in my opinion.

Agreed, the root problem of where the moisture is coming from needs to be addressed and cured before proceeding.

comment How to clean settled grease from kitchen cabinets?
TSP is great stuff for this situation. If you want something less caustic, aggressive, try some Dawn dish soap. I have had good success degreasing many items with it.

comment What type of pen do I need for my rabbit?
you may want to consider a pen with a top or roof so predators cannot get into the pen and attack your bunny!!!

comment Basement subfloor using p.t. sleepers and plywood?
What is the moisture situation at floor level? any history of water, or flooding? Sleeper and plywood is pretty old school, with all the new products out there. What is the finish floor material gonna be?

Without actually seeing the extent of damage under the siding, it is very difficult to plan a course of action.

comment how to fix rotten exterior wall
You will have to inspect it when you take off some of the siding.. If it's rotted, you will need to jack the wall 1/4 inch and replace the sill with a PT sill. Don't put new stuff on a rotted sill.

the idea will be to correct the drainage so the water flows away form the building. hard to really tell from the pic.
