General Building Contractor, Certified Home Inspector and Licensed EPA Renovator. I am winding down my years of pounding nails, building custom homes and additions, renovating kitchens and bathrooms, and converting cellars and attics into beautiful living spaces. I am doing more and more home inspections as my bones age and my back gives out. Now I find it easier to look objectively at home structures than to build them. My goal here on Stack Exchange is to help DIY'ers do it the right way and share my years of building experience with them. I may not always give the most popular answer, but I will always give my best informed advise.

How do I maximize the value of my home for an upcoming appraisal? Appraisals are not greatly influenced by minor cosmetics. They are mostly looking at square footage, age, and general overall condition as compared to other similar houses in the area (comparables). The only items that would make differences measured in thousands of dollars would be items like a brand new roof, very upscale new kitchens and master bathrooms, perhaps some upscale floors or landscaping. The few items you mentioned would not raise your appraisal much if any. be sure the house is clean, and there are no glaring structural defects. |

How do I remove black rings on a wood kitchen top formed by a tin can? Oxalic acid is the active ingredient in Barkeeper's Friend cleaning powder. I use this stuff all the time for lots of applications from minor stain removal to polishing glass. |

How can I touch up a marred furniture paint job? Dupont auto paste polishing compound, or 3M 1200 or finer auto paper. You should find either at an auto supply store. the paste is common even at WalMart. |

Should I triple up 2x6, or 2x8 to help level a floor? Is this an unfinished area where you will not be using as living space? |

Should I triple up 2x6, or 2x8 to help level a floor? If I understand right, you want to build a layered beam and install it perpendicular to the existing floor joists, and support it with posts ?? That is completely different than sistering the joists. |

How can I reduce the bounciness of a floor? My advise is to move. It is obvious the floor joists are not substantial enough to support the load, thus are flexing under normal use. There is no DIY remedy that I would recommend for a rental unit. |

How do I take apart a wooden pallet without cracking the wood? pallets are built from junk hardwood with tons of flaws. why are you even bothering? Cut the boards at the ends before the nails and salvage the rest. |

How should I build the concrete footings for my deck? Great pics. I have a buddy with a utility pole truck, so he drills the holes and sets the porch posts for me. I just have to plumb and backfill, sure makes like a lot easier. |

What is “workmanlike manner”? @DMoore; wasn't suggesting you might debate with an inspector, just saying, because it happens all the time and a DIYer will not win the debate. @Argento; cross beaming is running wires under joists or beams and stapling them up, rather than boring holes at the right spot and chasing wires thru them. |

What should I expect when removing a chimney? If you don't want to drop the bricks down the flue and remove them from the bottom, build a wood slide out of plywood and 2X4's down the roof, so bricks will fall to the ground in a safe place and not damage the roofing. |
