comment Is there a way to trace water pipes through walls?
That was half the question: the whole question was how to trace water pipes with the goal of finding the shutoff valve..

Buy higher quality curtain rods.

And as stated above - you still won't find your valves without actually looking.

@UNECS None of those will tell you where a valve is located. You still have to cut a hole and look to find that.

Is your box connected to armored cable? (Metal sheath wrapped around the two cloth wires)

Hang on - are we clear on what I mean by air return? They need to suck air, not blow it...

Do you have an air return on your upper level?

comment How do I connect a dryer with a four prong plug to a three prong socket?
Yes, but we don't know how his house is wired. His 3 prong outlet may have been WIRED h/h/g.

If you know how to test the outlet for whether it's hot/hot/ground or hot/hot/neutral, do so. If not, you should consider hiring an electrician to ensure that the outlet is wired correctly and safely as a 3 prong and change the plug on your dryer, or upgrade the outlet to 4 prong which may take rewiring to the panel.

I think at this point the best option for us is to rescind our answers pending more information about the existing setup.

First, I stand corrected on the above. Second - They still sell three prong outlets today. They still sell four prong outlets today. They still sell three prong plugs today. They still sell four prong plugs today. We - NONE of us - really KNOW whether his 3 prong is HHN or HHG. The 3 prong plug may be perfectly safe as H/H/N as long as the 3 prong wire is connected correctly.

What Tester said. Third pins on 220 plugs are never ground. The options are hot/hot/neutral (3 pin) and hot/hot/neutral/ground (4 pin).
