comment Why do we fit skirting boards to collect dust?
Ah, but I like the way my carpets HIDE the dust, rather than display it! (Although, when you lift a carpet, it does make one want to vomit....)

@Comintern I guess you are referring to the way the skirting board needs to conceal the join between the end of the wooden flooring and the wall (which would collect dust!). With carpets, this wouldn't be an issue.

comment Stripping parquet floor glue to install underfloor heating
House was built 1959, and the neighbours have the same parquet, so I do think it is original. I hadn't considered the need to insulate UNDER the underfloor heating. Maybe I can just dig up the middle of the floor, and ignore the 1m border around the edge?

The floor is concrete which, I assume, sits on the bare earth. The wall cavities are already insulated. What more can I do?

comment How do I unstick a radiator valve?
Yes, it is some oddity of the pipework. But no matter how I set the upstairs lockshield, the radiator below never achieves a decent temperature like all the others!

comment Can disconnecting the cold switch on a shower pump save money?
The pump manufacturer actually replied to an email (with a phone call) and advised that disconnecting one sensor wouldn't cause any problems. Hurrah!

Good idea to have a timer to keep things silent at night. That should be easy to fit. The pump is so damn loud that I don't think sound insualtion would work. Thanks everyone.

Oops, forgot to say it's the old-fashioned type, not thermostatic.

comment Easiest & Best way to make a box shelf
You don't need rabbets. Especially if you're not experienced in DIY. There are many other ways to support the shelf with metal brackets or wooden battens screwed to the wall.
