comment Where to connect a c-wire on a furnace with existing two wire mercury thermostat
The TR terminal on the gas valve is the lead from the transformer, while the TH terminal is the heat call wire from the thermostat. The device in the last image is a fan and limit control. It turns the blower on based on the setting and the temperature of the firebox. Follow the wires from the gas valve, one should lead you back to the transformer (which is likely inside a box where the electrical line feeds in).

You also connect a grounding wire to the screw in the metal junction box.

comment Options for humidifier
Depends on the humidifier. They come in all different shapes and sizes. You might even be able to find one that mounts to the wall, and uses ducting to move the air through it. Or you might be able to create your own ducting to accomplish a similar setup.

Most humidifiers are mounted on the side of the return duct (with an opening into the duct), with a bypass to the supply ducts. This allows cool return air to pick up moisture, and be mixed into the warm dry air leaving the furnace.

comment Can tree shade hurt a neighbor's house?
Civil Code Section 833. Trees whose trunks stand wholly upon the land of one owner belong exclusively to him, although their roots grow into the land of another. So unless you move the trunk of the tree onto their land, it's always your tree. The neighbor could claim the encroaching branches are a nuisance, and then will likely be allowed to trim them back to the property line. However, in doing so they cannot cause "wrongful injuries to timber" (Section 3346 Civil Code).

The laws I've read say the tree belongs to the owner of the land where the trunk is. I've heard many folks; lawyers included, say that you can trim a tree branch that hangs over your land. I have not, however, ever seen/heard anybody site the source of this "law". So I'm curious if this actually is a law.

For an interesting case, search "Rony v. Costa"

Can you point to a law or ordinance that supports point 1? I've heard this stated from time to time, but never actually found anything to legally back it up.
