What type of aluminum are squares and 72" straight-edge rulers made of? This answer implies that there is only one kind of aluminum that can be bought when in fact there are a number of widely used alloys. As with steels, the heat treatments that are done on many of these aluminum alloys significantly modify their properties. Finally these alloys are stronger than pure aluminum, not softer. |

How to repair a small hardwood crack? The wood has actually contracted due to lower humidity now. When the humidity increases again the crack will probably close up on its own and it could even blow out the ends. As Henry describes below, allowances need to be made for expansion and contraction cycles in solid wood. There would have been less chance of cracking if the grain had been run the long direction of the bench instead of the short direction. |

How do I sharpen wood lathe tools? The angle does matter, but it depends on the type of tool and how it is going to be used. |

How can plywood edges be finished to conceal the plies? MDF is commonly used for painted kitchen and bathroom doors (search 'custom cabinet doors' online). If you have a real lumberyard nearby you might be interested in ultralight MDF which is slightly more expensive but would be easier to handle when you are cutting the parts. |

Can I put a sanding drum in a routing table and use it like a spindle sander? The shanks of router bits are manufactured to specific sizes in order to be held securely in the router collet. Speed control or not, it would be unwise to use any tool in a router that isn't specifically intended to be used that way. |

What could cause polyurethane to dry with excess gloss? I would love to see a reference to some product that has the gloss as the additive, because I don't think it exists! I suspect the people believing this are simply misinterpreting instructions to 'stir completely to ensure a consistent gloss level' or something to that effect. |
