Assuming I use gas as the fuel source, what would the end implementation look like? Are you talking about a wall-mounted unit(s), a gas boiler for a fluid in-floor system, or something else entirely?

I'm not looking for opinions, so much as reasoned and supportable ideas, given the context. If there are several available solutions, that's great — we can evaluate based on given considerations which is the best (eg. air dryness is not a problem, but a forced-air system isn't a good fit for a such a small space; or a wood furnace would be very cost effective, and you could put the furnace in the garage below; or a radiator system would be great, but you'll need to run a water line).

@Tester101 Imagine you and I are old buddies, and I'm telling you about my plans to build a new detached garage with a bonus room. I say, "... but I'm not sure of a good way to heat the bonus room office in Winter.". Then you take a sip of your beer, stare thoughtfully into the distance for a few moments, and respond: [idea or follow-up question here]

@Tester101 I appreciate the fuel efficiency comparisons, but what I'm looking for is a sense of how this could ultimately be implemented in a detached-garage space like this (eg. electric via space heater, or in-floor radiant; wood via in-room stove, or exterior boiler — that kind of thing).

Changed text to allow for range of options, not necessarily the absolute most efficient

@wallyk On my most recent utility bill, I'm seeing that I pay $0.12061/KWH.

@Tester101 It doesn't need to be the absolute most efficient means of heating (so, no — not a comprehensive comparison at all). I'm just looking for a good, reasonably efficient option, given the considerations.

Good call on sorting by size ahead of time. I usually do that when I install hardwood floors, but hadn't thought about it in this case (wasn't sure whether the product itself would come in a uniform size or not).
