What material should I use for a custom, do-it-yourself desk for my home office? Go with something from the Ikea benchtop range (try their kitchen benchtops). Very Cheap, dead easy, and a much better result than doing it yourself. |

What are the red streaks in my toilet occasionally? My Dr solved this one for me, he just told me to stop eating so much broken glass. |

How can I seal the grout on kitchen wall tiles to give lasting stain and mould protection? But, as I said, why does it have to be re-done every year? Surely there's a better alternative - or are people just exaggerating? |

How should I prepare doors and windows for painting? Outside or inside? Is there are paint or enamel or anything on the wood already? |

How do I cover old baseboard (skirting)? One of my options was something like that, but square to give a better look. It'll hide the tile edge nicely, but the old trim is still ugly, very uneven (at the top, so quarter round won't kide it), and clearly shorter than the rest of the house (as the tile is thick). |

What kind of caulk should I use around my bathtub? Use all-purpose spray and wipe cleaner after application. Works wonders. |

How do I safely replace a worn out electrical outlet? Another Aussie here: A licensed "electrical contractor" is also OK (and usually cheaper). Also note that changing your lightbulbs is illegal under the same regulation (no joke). |

Plugging a hole in the ceiling +1, and I'd add: plaster or gap-fill around the edges of the plasterboard piece before painting. |
